Emily Wilson

Emily Wilson

Emily Wilson creates narrative nature-themed wall sculptures consisting of intricately painted and carved basswood forms, often birds, fish, floral, and foliage, affixed to curving steel armatures. Emily Wilson was born in 1959 in Memphis, Tennessee and was raised in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1982, she received a BFA degree with a focus in painting from the Memphis College of Art in Memphis, Tennessee. During her time there she developed an interest in wood and metal media. Combining media and techniques with painting she began exhibiting her sculptural works in 1985. She took several semesters of independent study in the Wood Department at various times through the 1980's and 1990's at the Appalachian Center for Crafts in Smithville, Tennessee. Her influences include Mexican folk artoutsider art, and the aesthetic of New Orleans—where she lived in the late ’80s.
